A Few Grocery Favorites…

I like to try new things often, so when I go grocery shopping I like to embark on a journey and pick up items that I’ve never tried before. Sometimes my grocery shopping is online, at vitacost.com because they have awesome deals on great natural supplements/natural foods, (for example my favorite protein bars I posted about before– they are $14 as compared t0 $23 at TJ’s) and sometimes my grocery shopping is, well, at the store. Luckily for me grocery stores are becoming increasingly more “health-conscious”. For example, Stop and Shop maybe 10 years ago didn’t even know what organic milk was, or care  about natural food in general for that matter. Now, when I go there I find not only organic milk, but LOCAL organic milk, I find health foods from international places– including deliciously simple whole grain pretzels with sesame seeds, and items like imported swiss and german chocolate that contains absolutely nothing artificial and is incredibly high quality. In the particular grocery store near me, there is actually an entire section of the store dedicated to organic, natural foods– and it makes me so happy that I don’t have to travel to Whole Foods/ pay an extreme amount. Before I continue to praise these grocery stores any more though, allow me to give you a couple of my newest favorite items that I recently discovered… and one that I’ve always loved and absolutely must share with you (#4).

1. Raw Revolution Organic Live Food Bar with Sprouted Flax Seeds– I got the Chocolate Coconut bar. This is by far the most delicious raw food bar I’ve ever had. I’m not a big fan of dates and with this you don’t get the flavor from them, you truly just taste the coconut and chocolate, almonds, and you feel energized after eating it. 7 ingredients, 82% raw, vegan, soy free, non GMO, no refined sugars, kosher. The whole nine yards (as my mom likes to say). Definitely give it a try. It’s a great snack for when you’re on the go.

2. Odwalla Nourishing Food Bars. Now, I’ve known about these for a while and I’ve always been a fan, but the reason I bring this up is because I was ecstatic to find such a good deal on them at the store. 10 for $10. If you are a fan of protein and energy bars, you know how incredibly expensive they are, so this really brightened my day, and my wallet. My favorite flavors are Chocolate Chip Peanut, which is deliciously crunchy, Choco-walla, which is obviously deliciously chocolatey, and Superfood, which provides 500mg of spirulina, barley flour, unsweetened coconut, and has no refined sugars. Superfood has only 4 grams of protein so if you’re going for the protein and less of the fiber, etc, go with the Chocolate Chip Peanut kind (which has 7 grams).

3. SmartyPants vitamins. Vitacost has an amazing super saving deal on these vitamins, and it’s definitely worth checking out. They are made in California and the brand just makes me grin from ear to ear for SO many reasons. For one, they are delicious gummies that contain multiple vitamins, Omega 3, and Vitamin D3, they use only natural flavors and colors and organic sweeteners, they are gluten and casien free, and if that wasn’t enough they are partners with an organization called Vitamin Angels– which is a 1-for-1 company that makes a matching nutrient grant to a child in need whenever you buy their products. For all of you out there that don’t remember to take your fish oil, this solves that problem because it’s in the gummy. The serving size is 6 gummies, so if you want you can spread it throughout the day or you can take them all at once. I love these things!

4. Lemon-Ginger Echinacea. This is like a non-alcoholic hot toddy on steroids. It rescues your sore throat and works wonders on your immune system when you’re sick. It also contains honey so it soothes, it has 110% vitamin C, and it is of course, all natural, with no artificial colors or flavors. Simply pour yourself a cup and heat it up in the microwave like you would do with any hot beverage, and it tastes great. I like to concentrate it with water so that I only have half of all the sugar, because it is pretty sweet. You can get this specific kind at Trader Joe’s, but I’m sure they have something similar at your local supermarket.

Countries That Ban GMOs

The french like to say “OGM, no merci! Oui a la biodiversite!” aka “GMOs? No thanks! Yes to biodiversity!”

If all of these countries are banning them, what are we doing wrong??? Ask yourself this and do the research!

While this is a study carried out in the UK, it’s outcomes affect many more countries, including America which is in the top 10 countries in terms of cancer frequency per country (3), and where according to the CDC, about one-third of US adults (33.8%) are overweight or obese, putting them at a higher risk for cancer(4). Additionally, approximately 17% (12.5 million) of US children and adolescents aged 2-19 years are also obese (4), and it has been reported that US teens do not eat enough fruit and veg (5).
