Professor O’s Tips to Minimize Environmental Damage and Maximize Health

1. Minimize pesticide load and use

  • Limit pesticide and fertilizer use when possible
  • Use slow-release fertilizers
  • Avoid mixed products with fertilizer and pesticide combined
  • Spot treat weeds
  • Apply low doses of slow-release fertilizer

3. Minimize GMO’s

  • The best way to minimize your intake now is to eat only Organic corn and soy
  • 90% of all corn in the country that is non-organic/conventional is GMO
  • GMO means Genetically Modified Organism, and Monsanto is responsible for the patent on GMO corn and soybeans

4. Minimize CAFO meat, especially beef

  • Animals are not meant to be caged
  • When cows are grass-fed (which genetically and evolutionally they were meant to be), you get the Omega 3 fatty acids from the grass they are eating
  • Organic, grass fed is better for the health of the cow
  • Organic, grass fed is better for the environment
  • Organic, grass fed is better for your health

5. Minimize meat in general

  • Americans get 1/2 of their calories from meat! 1/2! This is not only extremely unnecessary, but also incredibly detrimental to our environment
  • Meat production contaminates water
  • Factory farming wastes enormous amounts of energy, fuel, food
  • GMO soybeans and corn are produced in mass amounts and fed to cows
  • Hormones are used to grow animals quicker and antibiotics are used to treat sick cows, chickens, pigs, turkeys thus we ingest them when we eat those animals

6. Minimize unsustainable fisheries

7. Minimize fish with a high chemical load

  • Buy harpooned swordfish vs high lined and imported
  • Do not eat tile fish- VERY high in mercury
  • Don’t eat striped bass, bluefish over 25, blue crab—high levels of PCBs

8. Minimize perishable dairy- very inefficient way to produce

  • Producing conventional cow’s milk takes an enormous amount of energy to produce, a lot of waste is involved in the process
  • Buy organic almond milk, coconut milk, soymilk to alternate
  • Buy ONLY organic grass fed milk, or local whenever possible

9. Compost food waste

  • Don’t underestimate the power of nutrients, both for your body and for the earth

10. Buy and eat “real foods

  • Whole foods
  • Whole grains
  • Minimally processed foods
  • Read labels and eat only things that sound like food

11. Celebrate food (because a lot of lives were taken for it to be produced)

  • Buy fair trade
  • Buy products that are animal-testing free
  • Appreciate that you have a choice to vote for positive change every time you buy an item in the grocery store

12. Producing food destroys life along every step of the way

  • Be aware of where your food came from, how it was made

13. Land under the plow was once a habitat

  • Be aware of other living creatures and their impact on our ecosystem
  • Be aware of how you affect the lives of other species and their homes

14. Grow or harvest food

  • There’s nothing more satisfying than growing, harvesting, and eating your own food
  • You’ll form an entirely new definition of “fresh”

15. Cook every day and treat cooking as a pursuit

  • Get help when you need it (gardening, eating, cooking advice)
  • Get help with soil pH and lime recommendations
