… Never doubt the impact you can have, no matter how small your voice may be at first.
As I stated in my blog posts in France, while I am a political thinker, I don’t like having conversations about politics turn heated, which is almost always the case when people disagree.
When I bring up the topic of health and nutrition, many people in our country hold an “ignorance is bliss” mentality, and when you even begin to question something, they become defensive and guilt-ridden.
At Circle Diner last night my roommate Sam brought up how she didn’t find out that pepperoni wasn’t a vegetable until last year. Thus, inevitably launched the topic of the conversation from the subject of the snowstorm approaching… to health and nutrition. Despite my two friends Ali and Molly being nursing majors, we tend to disagree on a lot about the topic of processed food, GMOs, and the like, which is why I often don’t like to even bring it up. I have learned that you cannot change people, they must want to change through their own will. The only thing you can do is educate those who want to listen and hope that those who don’t will eventually drink the all natural kool aid. ; )
But, while the quote “Sometimes its better to be kind than right. We don’t need a brilliant mind that speaks, but a patient heart who listens.” trips me up often in these types of discussions, in general, we as a society are too worried about hurting others feelings and forget about getting to the nitty gritty. We’re worried about being politically correct and we are pessimistic that the change “we’d like to see” will never occur.
Well what’s stopping us? Revolution has never happened before without a little kick in the butt. We need to go out with a bang, stand up for what we believe in, and stop trying to please everyone.
The research is out there, people are starting to talk and change the things they eat, and demand regulations on harmful additives in our food and GMOs (Genetically Modified Food http://www.responsibletechnology.org/gmo-education) which are terrible not only for our environment but our health. Did you know in Europe GMOs are banned from even being grown in their countries? And in the USA it’s not even necessary to label when you are eating GMOs? Not to mention 90% of processed food in our grocery stores is GMO….)
So tell your friends that even though they want to eat those pancakes, you want yours to be made with whole grain wheat flour and you want your eggs to be local, organic, from a small farm near by, not from a falsely “cage-free” nationwide organic company, which doesn’t really care about the environment, but cares about making a profit from people who don’t do their research…. *cough cough* Land O’ Lakes and Eggland’s Best… to name a few. Because you care. And because you do your research, and you know that change starts with us, the consumers.
